Bill Palmer from Beatweek Magazine, interviewed Apldeap; the filipino artist talked about his solo projects and about Black Eyed Peas New Album.

1-Four years went by between your previous two albums. But now between The E.N.D. and The Beginning, it’s been barely a year and a half. What led to that where you guys said let’s get something out there quicker this time?

Apl: It was a natural progression, being inspired by going out and seeing what’s out there, me and Will had been DJing every night on tour. Sometimes when we DJ we try to create new songs just for that night, and those tracks we ended up using them for this album. So we’re always inspired by what’s going on and new stuff. We bring our laptops and set stuff up in the hotel room with our mics, and try to keep fresh.

2-Is this the first time you guys have laid the groundwork for an album while you were on the road?

Apl: We’ve done that in earlier years. From Elephunk through Monkey Business we did that. And then also The Duchess, Fergie’s album, we also did that. The John Lennon Bus was with us on tour, when we’d get a break we’d all jump in there.

3-Are you guys just having some fun with your album names, The E.N.D. and then The Beginning?

Apl: Every ending got a new beginning, you know? For this album we implemented a lot of technology into it. In the U.S. there’s not a lot of music stores anymore to sell music. It’s all through the internet and media, and that’s the beginning of new technology. So we tried use a lot of that technology with this new album.

4-As far as The Time (Dirty Bit), I think you guys are the only ones who can take an eighties pop song like “I Had The Time Of My Life” and completely rework it into an electronic hip hop song and have it work. Where did you guys come up with the idea for that?

Apl: You had a feeling that you were going to have a good time that night, so the next day you reminisce back that you had the time of your life. We also picked that song because of the settings of going out, having a good time, having the time of your life, especially with the music industry and the economy right now, and we’re still supported by our Peabodies and still touring and doing what we love and doing great. The song just came about like sometimes when you go out to DJ, we like to create something new. It’s one of those songs like Barbara Streisand, with a dope beat after it, you know? It’s like an instrumental. So we were influenced by those type of songs, going to these dance festivals and going to underground electro clubs, and then put our Black Eyed Peas twist to it.

5- Can you help us out as far as the Black Eyed Peas definition of the term “dirty bit”?

Apl: It’s saying the beginning in a different way. It’s going back to the beginning, and dirty bit is eight bit, and that’s how technology started. So dirty bit, going back to the beginning when you used to play Atari and those graphics.

6- I’m hearing that your 2011 tour is going to have most of the shows at stadiums instead of arenas. Is that the case?

Apl: Yeah, there’s definitely a lot more stadium shows this time around.

7- What’s different about seeing you guys in an outdoor stadium?

Apl: First of all, a lot more people can attend. We like to add a lot of production in our shows these days and we need a lot of space. A lot of technology that we try to use, you can’t really use indoors, so it’s better for us to do the stadiums.

8- Speaking of stadiums, it’s just been announced that you’ll be playing in the stadium in Dallas for the Super Bowl halftime show. How long have you guys known about that?

Apl: There’s been a lot of talk going two months back, but it’s just recently been put down on paper that we’re actually doing it. I thought Oprah was big, but the Super Bowl is gonna be an amazing experience knowing a lot of greats have played there, from Prince to Rolling Stones. It’s just sheer crazy to share that stage with the greats.

9- When I go to Dolphins games you guys are always up on the Jumbotron doing the “Fins up” and all that stuff. So you guys are actual football fans, right?

Apl: Yeah definitely. We like going to them. We go crazy at the VIP lounges and like acting the fool. We enjoy the energy of the people and watching the game live is so exciting. So it’s definitely a privilege to play.

10- The last three or four Super Bowl acts have all been living legends. They’ve been playing it safe and everyone knows why, because of the situation with the censors. Is it safe to say, can you guys guarantee there will be no wardrobe malfunctions this time around?

Apl: Well I’ve been working out lately, so I might want to show a little bit of muscles. No I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding. If none of the rigs from the scoreboard or my jetpack doesn’t run out of gas, I think we’re alright. We learned not to do that from past performances that we’ve witnessed.

11- Are you really gonna bust out a jetpack at the Super Bowl?

Apl:(Laughs) Well we’ve got something really special, but I don’t want really want to give it away right now.

12- I know your focus right now is on the Peas and on The Beginning, but all four of you each have your own things going on. As we get into 2011, what should be look for from the world of Apl?

Apl: I’m actually coming out with a mixtape that’s produced by me and DJ Ammo, and it’s mixed with some of my solo stuff, some of the Peas stuff, and some of the stuff I like. Definitely look for my mixtape coming out soon. I’m also building an Apl school in Philippines, which I bought forty laptops and I bought a building Philippines and I’m gonna put them in there, and hired three teachers.

13- We always see you with the mohawk. Is it difficult to maintain?

Apl: I’ve gotten used to it by now. We’ve got groomers on the road, so that makes it easier. I’ve actually learned how to do it on my own too. So it’s pretty easy to maintain. Sometimes if I don’t want to do nothing with it, I call it the faux hawk (laughs).

14- Have you decided what the next single is going to be, or do you have some candidates in mind?

Apl: My candidate would be Just Can’t Get Enough. It’s a different tempo and it’s also paying homage to the ladies. It’s a love song and it’s got a nice melody to it. So I think it would be a great different taste for our listeners.

15-But that’s not decided?

Apl: Yeah, everybody’s got theirs. We’ve got to still pick it.

[News] Apldeap: "I’m getting nervous this time around...” Super Bowl Interview
adriph on 11-12-2010, 06:49 (UTC)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic The Black Eyed Peas have spent a good portion of 2010 touring their multi-platinum album The E.N.D. before releasing their follow-up LP The Beginning. But will.i.am, Fergie, Taboo, and apl.de.ap are set to hit a career high in 2011, when the quartet performs a medley of hits during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLV in Texas.

While the group has played to sold-out arenas across the globe, the high-profile gig has them surprisingly on edge. “We thought Oprah was big, but to perform at the Super Bowl where a lot of the greats have performed, I’m getting nervous this time around,” apl.de.ap tells Rap-Up.com. “It’s a great opportunity because usually, the Super Bowl, they pick rock legends and stuff, so this time around you get a little different taste of different music genres.”

Though the Peas have yet to decide how the performance will shape up, the international phenoms plan on bringing the energy and the noise with a mix of past hits and new material from The Beginning. “It’s just going to be Peas. Lots of energy and a lot of our songs you always hear at the sporting events. So at least in that way, we can tell what kind of music they like,” explains apl. “We’re going to utilize all the songs that they utilize from us, [like] ‘I Gotta Feeling.’ I don’t know, maybe flying over the scoreboard or something.”

The Filipino MC also admits that there’s a lot to live up to given previous performances, noting Prince’s 2007 halftime show as one of his favorites. “Prince’s performance was like—the timing and when he sang ‘Purple Rain’ and then it actually rained. You can’t pay for that stuff. That’s like the world giving back. So that’s the one that caught my eye.”

-Rolling Stone Magazine Review:

It's kind of poetic that Will.i.am was one of the last people to record with Michael Jackson. Whether or not you like the Black Eyed Peas, their 11 million-selling 2009 album, The E.N.D., is the closest thing we've had in the past few years to Thriller — the ubiquitous pop album everybody lives with. The E.N.D. conquered Earth with a digital bum-rush built from hammering robo-beats, synth goo, elegiac Auto-Tune and overheated chant-rapping that makes Sisqó seem like a Rhodes scholar. In a moribund music biz, it's almost as if mystical belief in the power of crazy, cheesy bigness was its own kind of defiant idealism.

Only a self-destructive maniac would mess with such alchemy, and The Beginning largely picks up where The E.N.D. left off: all in-the-red party jams and escapist whoosh. But with a notable exception: The E.N.D. came with a slathering of political sermonizing about hope, change and the power of the "now generation"; this time out, Will.i.am throws his support entirely behind the notion of people coming together on the dance floor. "I'll pledge my allegiance to rhythm and sound," he Auto-yelps on "Play It Loud." Call it a DJ Hero democracy.

The Peas have always been stylistically flexible, and on The Beginning, they give themselves over more fully than ever to the groove palette of club culture, stirring up electro funk, Euro-trance and classic disco, micromanaging every beep within an inch of its life. "It's in fashion to be blasting them beats," Will sings over a Chic sample on "Fashion Beats," which features Fergie's spot-on Debbie Harry hommage.

They're as surprised as anyone that they're the biggest hip-hop act on the planet, and the music exudes thankfulness. "The Time (Dirty Bit)" steals its chorus from the Dirty Dancing duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" and flips it into the kind of trashy thumper Snooki does cartwheels to. On the equally gracious "Someday," Apl.de.ap gets personal, singing about his blue-collar work ethic and Filipino-immigrant background as Edge-like guitar shimmer suggests boundless promise.

This much serotonin in four humans can only mean they'll get carried away all over the place, and Beginning bubbles with the kind of slobbering excess that drives Peas haters bonkers. Who else but Fergie and Will.i.am would think to take the "me love you long time" sample from 2 Live Crew's "Me So Horny" and sing it as the hook in a romantic duet? With the Peas, you gotta take the inane good with the inane bad. And when they hit the right note of airhead, air-punching majesty — just check out the gorgeous "I Gotta Feeling"-style glide of "Play It Loud" — the good can be kind of inescapable.
If you do wish to escape it, please avoid bars, open windows, doctors' waiting rooms, sporting events, sitcom montages, preschool graduations and your grandma for the next year or so, because it's gonna drown 'em all in rhythm and sound.
